I love both ideas. Once upon a time i wrote on the wiki/bugs something called 
tinydentid. 
It was meant to deal with this, but no one ever took it serious.
Your id is just a bit big, but it could work (or we could short it to last Xh 
ids (so 3 digits?).
I dont have any probs with using ^, but it does require a 3 keyb press, unlike 
@ and #, that are done with just 2.
