Thanks for all of the feedback I've received.
In the end, I've decided to manage two sets of groups - security and email
- but make my life somewhat simpler by making the security groups the
"authoritative" versions and run a script that "converts" them into email
groups. Thanks to the feature in LAM Pro where you can do this
automatically, it means that if anyone creates or modifies a security
group, the email group gets updated automatically.
I've written a blog about how I got to that conclusion and also posted the
Perl script in it:

It is my first Perl script so it isn't as refined as it might be :-).
