I wrote them usually from scratch, though it might be a good idea to 
have a library of common rule sketches to use.

Eventually, we should have a good GUI editor. Possibly, a web-based or 
web-browser based one is easiest to implement. I see the rule file as a 
database of rules, so this should be something like a database 
front-end, with search capabilities and ready-made sketches of rules 
(i.e., for typos in context, missing spaces etc.).

All decent XML editors do fine, though, so your IDE is simply buggy. 
Better file a bug report to your IDE rather than fiddle with our syntax. 
I don't think anyone would say that editing an XML file > 1 MB is 
impossible by design. It's a side effect that is always undesired. XML 
files are usually large.

So I would never bother to include a new variant. It's messy, and mess 
means bugs.
