It's not that it doesn't work - it's just that each commit makes the 
clone bigger forever (or until we clean up the history again, which we 
should avoid).

Any research on what might help us is very welcome. I have no 
experience with any of those tools / approaches.

Of course it's always possible to move modules to their own project. 
For example, a German (or whatever) POS tagger that works by looking up 
all possible readings from a dictionary is useful on its own. But that 
means someone would need to care about it, including releasing it to 
Maven central.
