I totally agree with the sentiments expressed. Style is very difficult
beast to define in precise rules. I see many of these rules rather as
guides that highlight the text so that dubious usage is easier to spot and
the level redundancy can be set to a comfortable level that depends on the
context. This is especially true on the TIRED_INTENSIFIERS rule.
I do not see anything wrong if -- and when -- style rules occasionally
highlight a word used by Jane Austin or Charles Dickens. That is to be
expected. On the other hand, I would not want the style rules to give an
impression that modern usage of English should be indistinguishable from
theirs. :)
I really hope to see a higher priority put into ability for calling
multiple rule sets and rule files from command line. These features would
open up LanguageTool for many interesting uses. Unfortunately my own java
skills are not up to the task.
