Thanks Minksey! I booted the live CD of Ubuntu and didn't notice a beep anywhere under the /proc/asound hierarchy. Ubuntu has the same missing beep problem as OpenSolaris, though, so perhaps this is why.
In any case, I'm psyched to see some progress being made here and hope this can be resolved for 2009.06. Many thanks everyone.
