Phil,

Try an ifconfig -a and check to make sure everything is what you expect.
I have had issues dhcp before.

p.s.  If you like Slackware then I think you'll also like Solaris.  I am a
very longtime Slackware user and have really grown to like Solaris (but
not the dhcp client).
