No.  BSD loader, no.  The loaders must support ZFS root, ZFS boot, and
EFI due to standardization and support needs.  Sounds like a Lenovo
problem.  Look for a BIOS update, and verify it's IDE type for us. 
Alternatively, assuming the BIOS allows USB boot, get an external
DVD-ROM/RW and use that.
