This system has an AMD Turion X2 processor.  There are Timing issues
with that cpu.

I had the same sort of problem with my old Asaus laptop with the same
cpu.  Two things worked for me...

Try bouncing a Ctrl or shift key.  This triggers interupts which will
wake the kernel, this needs to happen until the NVidia or other
graphics driver loads.

I also found that around 30% of the time the kernel would get stuck at
the point you indicate and nothing would wake it.  A power off and
back on would usually work.
