You have the reason my new laptop is Intel Core Duo rather than AMD
Turion.  My old ASUS AMD Turion used to do the same sort of thing, it
is a well knwn issue.

If your system has an NVidia graphics system the nvidia driver should
ping the kernel every second to keep it alive, not sure if any other
drivers do that.

Issue has been around for about 3 years, don't see any sign of a fix.
