I have no idea if it is related, but my Sony Vaio doesn't do power save well with the generic kernel. I installed the -386 kernel, and the on-demand power mode now sits at 1/2 speed most of the time, with occasional spikes to full speed. With the generic kernel, it was almost always at full speed, with very occasional dips to 1/2. The heat is much less now, too. I just realized, though. You two probably won't want to use the -386 kernel, as I don't think it does SMP.
