I wonder where those numbers come from?  It surely would be nice to have them 
just come directly from the file system, but I bet they can't.  As I recall, 
our server won't tell you how big the file is (so your browser can't even 
display a meaningful progress bar).  I don't know what the issue is there.

Agreed.  If the luser is using the installer package, they are not going to be 
smart enough to follow the "manual" instructions; conversely, if they are smart 
enough to follow the manual instructions, they already know that OS X is Unix 
at heart and can figure out how to adapt the Unix instructions to install 
without the durned installer package...
