I should clarify that what is not working is that when the image is taller than it is wide, the value for parent.height should be assigned to the image view's height. But parent.height at that point in time is not the right value.
I have re-checked my calculations by hand and put debug.write statements in to verify that the correct logic is running. Why would parent.height not be its proper value at that instant, as seems to be the case? If I hard-wire the height for the proportional view to be "100%", overriding the class behavior, all is well. This is not a fix though, since I don't know until runtime which way the image is longer.
