Maybe so, but what is doing the good work ?
Is it the  Fcntl  or the use of  SDBM_File .

Please test:

   use Fcntl;
   use AnyDBM_File;

for on most platforms  AnyDBM_File  will choose better (i.e. more powerful)
database routines than are provided by  SDBM_File .
(Fabrice mentioned the block-size limit.)

it seems that  SDBM_File  is rather lowly ranked among the possible utilities.
Its only real advantage is that it should always be present.

However  AnyDBM_File  has a hierarchy of choices, which can be adjusted
rather easily, if necessary (see p.379, concerning  @ISA ).
