Yep, it works. Perhaps in dvips.def it is best to also change the line:
\@namedef{Gin@[email protected]}#1{{eps}{.bb}{`gunzip -c #1}}
to
\@namedef{Gin@[email protected]}#1{{eps}{.bb}{#1}}
