Folks:
I've recently found a bug(?) in the latest version (and perhaps earlier
ones too) of latex2html. This was a particularly gnasty one to track down.
The symptoms were that from some point onward gif-producing maths generated
blank gifs. To make matters worse, this problem went away (temporarily) when
certain occurrences of maths were deleted (or moved to another place). No
errors were generated by L2H during processing, although turning on -debug
revealed that the blank gifs were caused by overzealous cropping by pnmcrop
(e.g., cropping more lines than were present). My version of pnmcrop -v yields
usage: pnmcrop [-white|-black] [-left] [-right] [-top] [-bottom] [pnmfile]
so as far as I know that is not the problem.
Although I DO NOT know WHY the problem occurred, I DO know HOW to fix
it. The document I was creating was a book class document and I was resetting
the page number at the beginning of each chapter to 1. After much trial and
error troubleshooting I discovered that the culprit was the latex command
\setcounter{page}{1}
To solve the problem I simply put this command between %begin{latexonly} and
%end{latexonly} pairs. Now everything is OK again!

Bob Daley
