Hi, thanks,

I think I realised that in theory; as I explained, this material
isn't written by me, I start with whatever I get, and then try
to work outwards from there ;-)

A mail from Ross had arrived a little earlier, suggesting

   \newcommand{\oos}{$\mathcal{O}(\alpha \alpha_{s}^{2})$}

and I'm now using that successfully. It not only fixed the problems
that were overtly caused by the raw tex, but also fixed another
problem that I had previously assumed was being caused by something
else.

thanks to all, sorry if this was all too easy.
