This is usually the result of having an old version of the netpbm utilities.
Check this with pnmcrop -h
It should offer choices of crop each side individually.
If not, then update to the 1994p1 version from
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/utilities/

No. That is for the size of text in images typeset with LaTeX.
There is no control for text in the HTML document;
the reader sets this in the browser, to their own taste.
Alternatively you can edit the .css stylesheet, if you wish to force
a particular font-size. Consult http://www.w3c.org/Style/ .

\pagecolor{white}
This way you have the full power of LaTeX's color model to specify
colors, according to various color-models.
Of course this only works with LaTeX-2e, for the \usepackage mechanism.
