I have two weirdnesses to report. These are both in producing HTML
4.0 output. Also, a report of new related software.
  In 98.2beta8, `` and '' get replaced by “ and ”,
respectively. Though this seems acceptable as far as HTML is
concerned, many browsers (including Netscape 4.5 on Solaris) cannot
handle it. I'd like to suggest that the transform isn't done; I can't
think of any specific reason to do it. Another aspect of this is that
the transform is made in verbatim environments as well: this is
clearly a bug.
  Because of that bug, I've been using 98.2beta6 for production work.
This bug may have been fixed in more recent releases; please forgive
if this has already been dealt with. This version has a problem with
the markup:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The special characters are:

\begin{list}{}{\leftmargin 0.7in \labelwidth 0.65in}

\item[\character{.}] (Dot.) In the default mode, this matches any
character except a newline. If the \constant{DOTALL} flag has been
specified, this matches any character including a newline.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

  The HTML generated for this includes the first <DT> before the <DL>:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
<P>
The special characters are:

<P>

<DT>"<tt>.</tt>"

<DL COMPACT><DD>(Dot.) In the default mode, this matches any
character except a newline. If the <tt>DOTALL</tt> flag has been
specified, this matches any character including a newline.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

  For a complete example, the HTML is located at:
http://www.python.org/doc/lib/re-syntax.html, and the LaTeX sources
and styles are packaged as:
ftp://ftp.python.org/pub/python/doc/latex-1.5.2b1.tgz.
  Michael Ernst <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> has developed a Perl script
which attempts to convert LaTeX2HTML output to Texinfo, allowing us to
generate Emacs info files as well. It's available at:
http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/mernst/software/.  Still young, but
gets quite a ways there.
