latex2html is a long script with lots of useful stuff inside.

I suggest that both the Perl and the latex2html
communities would benefit by carving a set of reusable
Perl modules out of latex2html. Each module would its own
set of tests to verify proper execution. Each would have
its own documentation. Each would actually run with the
-w switch :) Each could be improved upon by mere mortals.

Modules that might be created would

        Parse a LaTeX document
Convert TeX chars to HTML entities
Create a GIF from TeX text
        Convert LaTeX tables to HTML

I acknowledge that this is a huge amount of work---and maybe it
just can't be done without completely rewriting latex2html. I
think that the effort would repaid in ease of maintenance and
extension.

I would be willing to help improve modules that would be
extracted, but just don't have the time (or inclination) to work
with the entire latex2html source.

What do people think?
