I had similar questions. This branch is about making vdenv easier to get started with, but it does have knock-on effects for non-vdenv environments that are less than appealing.
Fwiw, I have an alternative approach that I've been using to get started with vdenv (not that it's working yet...). There are no tests, yet; I wasn't sure it was worth pursuing.
