Right, I totally agree, and am a big fan of the bread-crumb system, I 
do find it handy, and would agree it's critical for people that are new 
to launchpad (especially those that aren't logged in yet).

Having another UI preference associated with my login, that collapses 
the bread-crumb into a mouse-over sensitive pop-up div is my random 
thought.  For example, doing something like how SourceForge handles it's 
top-level Tracker/Mailing Lists/Forums/Code/Download menus:
