The actor who played Benjamin Buford ``Bubba'' Blue in the movie
``Forrest Gump'' will face a reduced charge of attempted manslaughter
for allegedly stabbing his ex-wife's boyfriend during a fight outside
her Los Angeles home.

Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge Elva Soper downgraded the
attempted murder charge today at the conclusion of a weeklong hearing
and scheduled a May 1 trial for 41-year-old Mykelti Williamson, who
played Tom Hanks's shrimp farming buddy in the Oscar-winning ``Gump.''

Williamson was arrested Jan. 5 after allegedly stabbing Leroy
Edwards, the boyfriend of his ex-wife Cheryl Chisolm, after having an
argument with him and Chisolm at her home. Chisolm and Williamson
divorced in 1992.

Chisolm told police that Williamson had been seen ``stalking around''
her condominium before the alleged attack.

Edwards underwent surgery for the abdominal wound, and testified in
this week's hearing.

Edwards testified, ``He ran right at me, it came here, here and right
here.'' He indicated with his hands how Williamson allegedly wielded the
knife.

Prosecutor Manuel Garcia today rebuffed hints of a self-defense
explanation for the stabbing, saying ``one cannot issue a challenge to
fight another individual and then claim the right to self defense.''

Williamson, who is free on $180,000 bail, claims the incident was
``a really big misunderstanding,'' and said he looks forward to being
vindicated at his trial.
