Police say a driver mistakenly followed an official vehicle through a
checkpoint on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House and Treasury
Building, and when she didn't stop, guards raised a steel barrier that
blew out her tires and halted the vehicle in its tracks.

The woman was taken this morning from the scene by ambulance, but
Secret Service and Park Service uniformed police near the accident could
not say what condition the woman was in.

Police said the accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. at the White
House guard post directly in front of the Treasury Building on
Pennsylvania Avenue. An officer near the scene said an official vehicle
had just been cleared through the checkpoint when the other unauthorized
car ``just followed.''

The officer said police tried to get her to stop, but when she
continued on, they were forced to raise the steel barrier, which is
built into the ground. The barrier was only partially raised when it
impaled the vehicle, bringing it to a complete halt.

``It worked,'' said a uniformed division officer at the scene.
