I thought ever State needed to have a Bar, just as every State has a State

Lawyers lament, Calif. state bar going bust

The State Bar of California laid off three-quarters of its work force Monday
and said it faced more crippling cutbacks unless politicians figure out a
way to keep it afloat. The bar, which licenses and disciplines lawyers,
evaluates judicial candidates and provides legal aid to the poor, has been
struggling since Gov. Pete Wilson effectively stopped it from collecting
dues from the state's 128,000 practicing attorneys last October. The layoff
notices will go out to nearly 500 employees and the bar also plans to shut
its consumer complaint line and stop screening new candidates for positions
as judges.
99 percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
