Ron Lawyers lament, Calif. state bar going bust The State Bar of California laid off three-quarters of its work force Monday and said it faced more crippling cutbacks unless politicians figure out a way to keep it afloat. The bar, which licenses and disciplines lawyers, evaluates judicial candidates and provides legal aid to the poor, has been struggling since Gov. Pete Wilson effectively stopped it from collecting dues from the state's 128,000 practicing attorneys last October. The layoff notices will go out to nearly 500 employees and the bar also plans to shut its consumer complaint line and stop screening new candidates for positions as judges. 99 percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
