There is no right and left party despite rumors.  Without a parliamentary
system and with the decay of party discipline there is no particular need
for any politician to pay homage to some particular party platform.  I doubt
many would argue vigorously that Mayor Giuliani of New York City is not far
to the left of most elected Democrats.  He was even cross-endorsed by the
small Liberal Party, which is a counterpart of your Labour Party.
Ideological parties are a minor nuisance in this country.

The bulk of the politicians congregate around the center at any point in
time.  A Jesse Helms (rightwing) or Paul Wellstone (leftwing) are always
isolated.
