This could be the difference as multisampling in GLX is handled the same as for 
example alpha bits or color bits.

It is not part of GTK and OpenGL context creation never was unlike for example 
QT where the OpenGL widget is a first class citizen. AFAIR GLX 1.3 was released 
around 1998.
