I found a great article on doing this:

A few simple changes to port the TMover object to lazarus/freepascal. Worked
pretty well.
Now, I just need to figure out how to make a design grid and snap-to-grid
functions, etc. Is the designer code used by Lazarus a fairly straight forward
place to start poking around?
