Yes that can happen, but Commercial firms are getting nervous about the growth of the Open Source Movement.
Sun did acquire MySql.
IBM developed Open Office further with their Lotus Symphony.

So Open Source is a Winner   :-D

Not all manufacturers are brain damaged. Some can tell the difference between the tools they use (where Open Source provide a quality which can't be even dreamed by closed source), and their final product, which can be protected with specific patents.
