Hi, I'm CCing to the mailing list... I think this would be interesting for other people too.
I have checked the differences between lcms and Photoshop and found these are minimal--about 1-2 codes, and not visible at all. This is what I have done. - First applied tifficc to your sample image from the lcms-generated profile to adobeRGB. Stored as lcms.tif - Then in Photoshop 7, opened your image, assigned the lcms profile, Image-mode-convert to profile, AdobeRGB. To compare differences then I have downscaled to 8 bit, Image -Mode-8 bit and saved as ace.tif without embedded profile. Then, and in order to get bitmap differences, I have reopened both, lcms.tif and ace.tif WITHOUT color management, Image - calculations - difference-New document. Taking histogram of the resulting differences shows images are practically identical. So, lcms, at least in this case is doing same as Adobe ACE. Another question is why ACE and ICM behaves differently, but I (as many other people) suspect this is due to ICM bugs. Anyway, It seems to me Adobe ACE is a sort of industry reference, so I'm happy getting same results as Photoshop.
