Yes, LCMS unfortunately is a bit slow (sorry to say that, Marti) :-(
However, with Argyll's (http://web.access.net.au/argyll/argyllcms.html) IMDI (Integer Multi-Dimensional Interpolation) routines I could obtain a transform speed of nearly 14Mpixel/s for a 3D->3D device link transform with 8bpp on an AMD XP2600+. IMO this would be also sufficient for the GIMP display layer, since this corresponds to 10 full screen frames per second on a 1280x1024 display -- IMO not too bad.
