You won't get the broadest contribution from those with color expertise if
this is the hurdle to be jumped. There is a lot of good stuff out there
that could help GIMP out, but you can't expect it to be handed to you by
first having everyone become a GIMP hacker. Most of the expertise in color has
no
particular interest in GIMP as an end in itself (disappointing as that is,
I imagine, to those working on GIMP!).
What's more reasonable is for GIMP developers to look at what's out there,
and request assistance in making it suitable for inclusion in GIMP (ie.
interfaces,
features, licences, organization, explanation). It would be a far more efficient
arrangement for people to work in their areas of expertise, rather than
expecting
everyone to become familiar with the intricacies of GIMP.
Of course the broader view is that all this is inefficient, and a better
solution would be to develop a general color infrastructure for Linux
and other systems, a user of which would be GIMP.
