is it useful to place the matrix simply in the matrix part of a mft2 LUT?
Yes, you could do that in such way. But then you have to fill the CLUT with
an identity (8 nodes), since empty CLUTs are not allowed by the ICC spec.
Please note since the matrix is a linear transform, 8 nodes would be
enough to model it on the CLUT. So, you end with the same profile
size.

Perhaps this would suffice building a valid XYZ abstract profile?
All other parts of the mft2 can be filled with defaults.
