I think the clue lies here: "need blackpointcompensation"

Blackpoint compensation requires the knowledge of the source space's darkest 
black and the destination space's darkest black. If you split the 
transformation into two conversions then they both use Lab as the comparison 
point rather than the other profile... does this make sense?
