Wow, it's amazing what you don't find when you search with Google :>

Openmetadir looks really interesting but I need to spend some time
getting my head around it. At an initial glance, it looks like
Roland's built a generic messaging system and then built a
metadirectory application within that. It's a very clever approach.
I'll write up a comparison when I've had time to digest it some more.
