Our experience here at Symas has been that OpenLDAP performs very well on AMD-based servers. That said, you haven't provided very much information about your performance expectations, object size, etc. About all I can add is that you will probably need a 64-bit build of OpenLDAP to provide reasonable performance with 1-2M entries.
