Hi! this directory will be used for an email front end system that will
be authenticating users. I still don't have idea of the logins that
would be executed per hour. 

Have seen implementations with Fedora Directory Server?

Our experience here at Symas has been that OpenLDAP performs very well 
on AMD-based servers. That said, you haven't provided very much 
information about your performance expectations, object size, etc.
 About 
all I can add is that you will probably need a 64-bit build of OpenLDAP
 
to provide reasonable performance with 1-2M entries.

Perhaps you could tell us more about your planned application?
