Instead of traditional cluster what about the former N1 Grid now Oracle Grid 11g? Purports to offer to even run services as long-running jobs in the grid. I am thinking use LDOMs for grid nodes so share physical hardware and allow separation of at least test and production. It would seem to provide most effective use of hardware but unsure how this plays out with database servers. Leaving Oracle dbms aside, every group likes to run their own Informix server even when they both have the same revision of IDS. The one can reboot their dbms without stepping on the other. Each currently in its own zone.
