phpbb is nice and simple . Wordpress doesn't seem too bad(my predecessor
set it up at my new job, but I haven't had to deal with it yet), my
cooworker seem happy with it.  You may also want to look in to drupal.
It has more to it than phpbb, and wasn't bad to setup(once I gave up on
using it with postgres).  I have both phpbb and drupal set up at
ugotta.org if you want to take a look.  I haven't configured phpbb
yet(ya it's slow its running on a P166 with 64mb of ram, and the logo is
a work in progress....).
