When you add to that the fact most distros are using an older version
of Pygame than I'm coding for, and you get the strong desire to

You should resist that desire. :-) Building for your favorite
distribution is a good idea. Klik might be a good idea too. But don't
get sucked into the cross-distribution binary packaging vortex. It's
probably much easier to just backport your code so it works with older
versions of Pygame.
