I was considering writing an application very similar to this, the
twist I came up with was making the photos configurable, so that the
parent could say put in pictures of family who's name starts with that
letter. I thought that might make it a little easier for some kids
since they know names of people, plus it might help them become more
familiar with their family at a younger age. I would DEFINITELY be
interested in helping out in any way I could. I haven't followed the
checkers discussion, so I am not sure of the implementation language,
etc, but I'm proficient in several programming languages (even if I'm
not completely so in English :) )
