They are only permanently free if you download and register them before November (if I recall correctly). After that they will probably be around $50.

I love to program in .NET however I noticed in the past that people on this list don't seem to friendly towards MS or .NET programming so I have refrained from mentioning much about it.

Microsoft is offering "Express" versions of its Visual Studio and SQL lines

You can create and deploy even commercial apps with these tools.  They are
permanently free and not trial versions.  Perhaps, MS is seeing eroding
market share in the enterprise and they do not make much money from
hobbyists, anyway.  So, that's probably the motivation.

I've done a lot with creating mobile apps for WinCE.  VS2005 supports
creating mobile apps, as well.
