This link has the Internet version of the scriptures -- I don't seem to be able to find a link for the downloaded version. Is there an effort to make the installable version available for download? The Church would still maintain copyright for works that they would allow to be used for free.
When I go to the Distribution Center, I can buy a CD for $5, but the license agreement says that we can only install it on 1 computer. For $5, the Church is doing little more than paying for manufacturing and infrastructure for the CD. Therefore, the Church makes no real financial gain and it's an obstacle for users. Why not make this free for download or OSS? For some internal projects at work, I've done more than a little programming with Google Desktop Search. Microsoft has coming out with their own version as an add-on component, which will be included in the next version of Windows. Google's is better, but Microsoft's will improve. Good desktop searching seems to be an integral part of the immediate future. If the church OS'd the installable version of the scriptures, I'd be happy to build a desktop search interface to them -- there are a few more integration issues than you would think. True, GDS has its own interface (browser), but more people are comfortable using an application, these days. By providing an interface between the scripture reader application and the desktop search application, we could get some really great searches without having to build a search function into the reader application. Also, one could look up scriptures (via the browser) without having to launch the actual scripture reader application as the browser would launch it for you. If this is of interest to the group or the Church, I can tell you what I've learned from doing this process.
