I am "the guy" from John Harrison's stake (I just signed up). There
were three of us who are technology oriented who didthe work to make it
happen.

1) From earlier in the thread, I am pretty sure we are not the stake who
posted the recent success.
2) We were not quite as successful as the stake who posted. We used the
slingbox (interesting how we both came upon the same technology. In all
of our testing (we tried it for 8 hours straight) things seemed
successful. We tested in the evening before (with our adult session) to
see how it would go. It hung up once which had us a bit worried. On
the day of the Sunday session, things went poorly. The audio was bad.
We didn't use a pre-amp (wish I had read this thread before then).
About 5 times the signal locked up. Once it even required a complete
reboot. The membership (2 wards) in the remote building generally said
they couldn't hear in the chapel or in the overflow. The RS and Primary
rooms in that building could hear better. I think the acoustics once
the building was filled made a big difference. I also think we had a
bit of a reverence problem to begin with, then adding the TV factor
(kids aren't particularly reverent watching TV) and the audio problems,
the audio generated by the members contributed to the distortion of the
audio from the transmission.

Comments from leaders (bishops & high councilors) present in the remote
building:
"Whoever said it was positive overall is being very kind."
"The biggest issue was the quality of the sound. The music rumbled and
was almost inaudible. It took an extra measure of attention to
understand the speakers and even then there was about 10% that I
couldn't understand. "
"My feedback wouldn't be so positive, but I don't want to diminish all
of the great work and effort that so many good brethren, who are a lot
smarter than me, invested in this worthwhile cause. But even the little
problems were enough to break the rhythm and affect the Spirit in the
chapel. Many [I know] have used those low-end Sling boxes for
video-over-the-internet transmissions, and very few of them have been
happy with the quality. Based on my limited knowledge, they may not
have the capacity to achieve a "bullet proof" solution. "
"I still think It was a good idea and should be done again."
"Overall a C. First hour audio was a D+. I could not make out more than
10 words that President said. I was not alone. Second hour audio after
tweaked. C+ Still distorted but better. Audio from hand held
microphone (Spanish translator) A-: The hand held microphone was doing a
much better job than the podium microphone. Improving the microphone is
the key to making this work in the future. Video: It was a long way
from HD, but it was acceptable. I'd give it a B."
"The volume was as loud as it could go and sounded muted. With young
children it made it tuff to hear. The picture quality was grainy, and
would flicker on and off now and then. They lost the audio for a minute
and video for about 5 minutes during the general authority's talk.
People were leaving throughout the meeting; not sure why they left but
most figured is was because they couldn't hear very well or see very
well. All the above reasons they felt it distracted from the spirit."

Bottom line is that we are going to work on the solution for the next
stake conference. Since we don't fit into our stake center, we don't
have much choice but to make it work.
