Mormon Hacker has a post about a similar idea, only it uses Google
Earth, so the data resides on your desktop computer.

I'm on an email list for ward clerks, and there's been quite a bit

I don't know if it is open source but I bring it up because it
appears to be a really cool application, but the same issues are
being asked about on the list that were asked about on our list
awhile ago. If one uses this website, confidential data is being
passed to this website that is not affiliated with the church at
all. The website probably belongs to someone well meaning who
isn't storing the data for evil purposes, but there is no
guarantee. Just curious if anyone knows if the church has any
plans to make such an application for the church website. So far
I've seen this same application in two different forms. Both have
generated excitement. Both have also been cause for security
concerns since they are not owned by the church. It would be nice
if someone at the church would create such an application for the
church website and then there wouldn't be any need for people
writing their own. If it weren't against my beliefs, I would even
be willing to bet that one or both of the authors of these apps
would be willing to donate the code to the church.
