I'm on an email list for ward clerks, and there's been quite a bit of
chatter about the following web site:
http://wardmap.theballfamily.org/intro.asp

I don't know if it is open source but I bring it up because it appears to
be a really cool application, but the same issues are being asked about on
the list that were asked about on our list awhile ago. If one uses this
website, confidential data is being passed to this website

Kevin Ball is a friend of mine (okay, our wives were best friends growing up, so even though we we're half a continent away, we're at least amiable acquaintances!) and I forwarded your message to him with a "Hey, you're famous!" and got this response:

I'd be more than happy to pass the source code to the church...just not
sure who to pass it to.

If anyone's interested in collaborating with him, he does post an email address on his family web site. I don't think he's really "used" to an open source style of working, but I'm sure with some effort we can bring him to the light side. ;-)

It is a pretty neat application, but while I *might* consider copying his app for myself, I too won't put my ward's stuff on *his* site because as you pointed out, you're sending your unit's data places where it really doesn't belong. Half the church's contact info in one spot not properly secured would be too big a target, and I'd hate for some enterprising Living Scriptures salesman to lose his soul... :-)
