You already know the answer, David ... *nothing* is anywhere neary as
ubiquitous as the floppy drive ... it is hard to get a PC that does *not*
include a floppy drive, after all. 

There are compelling technical reasons to move away from floppies to almost
anything else, and compelling economic reasons to stay with a floppy target. 

In economic terms, the next cheapest thing after a floppy drive is 2 floppy
drives (new ones cost about $US 10 locally, and I find them for a buck at
garage sales).
