There are some SCSI drives I have that have a jumper that will allow you to set the drive to be read-only. I am sure there are IDE drives that support this 'feature'. The only issue is the ease of changing it when you need to write to the drive. I guess you could use a toogle switch wired to teh jumper point. But you most likely would have to power the machine off the make the change.
