Tom,
Debian uses gdm. I don't remember what I did to the server to enable XDMCP.

I used to use a 10mb hub, the Debian server was a 233MHz Pentium with 128MB 
ECC RAM. X was usable with that configuration. X performs much better now. 
I upgraded the server to a 400MHz Celeron. and installed a 100mb switch. I 
don't use Exceed as much as I used to. I usually just roll over to a Linux 
workstation, and do my work there.
