It is a standard module in the 2.2.16 and 2.2.19 kernels (ni65.c).  It is
compiled with Dave Cinege's LRP 2.9.8 kernel 2.2 tarballs
(www.linuxrouter.org)

I suspect Matthew Grant failed to enable it for compilation when he set up
the Materhorn LRP, and Charles never noticed and enabled it since then.

Yes. A kernel is a matched set with the modules it was compiled with.  
Depending on what features the module uses or options it was compiled
with, it is sometimes possible to force a separately compiled modules to
load, but you can't count on this.

You can use Dave's kernel and modules with Charles' image, if you have a
Pentium. (Dave compiled with Pentium code for some reason.)  I don't have
it set up to compile right now, but if no-one else steps up before Sunday
I'll try to do it then for the 486.
